A Beginner's Guide to Barre

Barre workouts have become increasingly popular in recent years, with many people flocking to these ballet-inspired classes for a fun and challenging way to stay fit.

If you're new to barre, it can be a little intimidating at first, but don't worry - this beginner's guide will help you get started and feel confident at the barre.

What is barre?

Barre is a low-impact, full-body workout that is inspired by ballet, Pilates and yoga. It involves a series of small, controlled movements designed to target specific muscle groups. The movements are often accompanied by upbeat music and performed at a ballet barre, although sometimes they may also be done in the centre of the room.

What should you wear?

When it comes to clothing, you'll want to wear something that is comfortable and allows you to move freely. At Heal’r, we also recommend wearing grip socks for safety. If you don’t have any grip socks, we stock them here.

What equipment do you need?

Most barre classes require minimal equipment. All of the equipment you need will be supplied for you at Heal’r. Some classes may also incorporate small props like hand weights, resistance bands or Chi balls to add variety and intensity to the workout.

What can you expect in a class?

A Heal’r Barre class is usually around 45 minutes long and consists of a warm-up, a series of exercises at the barre, some work in the centre of the room and a cool down. The exercises themselves are usually low-impact and involve small, controlled movements that target specific muscle groups like the glutes, thighs, core and arms.

You'll likely feel the burn pretty quickly, but don't worry - you'll get stronger with time.
